In your 20s, skin is generally free of the signs of aging. Start a medically supervised treatment plan now to protect your skin from the harmful effects of sun and environment.
Proper cleansing, moisturizing, and use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily will help ward off early wrinkles and enlarged pores. Mild peels and topical treatments may help control acne.
Botox® injections can prevent lines and filler agents such as Radiesse®, Restylane®, Juvéderm®, and Juvéderm Ultra Plus® can be used to fill out smile lines and augment lips.
For unfavorable size and shape of body features, surgery may be in order. Rhinoplasty, otoplasty and other aesthetic procedures can often be performed.
Decreased firmness and skin elasticity are a natural part of aging. Introducing anti-oxidants into your skincare routine can help prevent sun damage that leads to lines and age spots. Also, alpha hydroxy acids in conjunction with retinoids and topical antioxidants can restore a youthful appearance to the skin.
Non-invasive laser procedures may improve fine lines, brown spots, and broken blood vessels. Botox® injections can diminish laugh lines and create a smoother forehead. Fillers like Radiesse®, Restylane®, Juvéderm®, and Juvéderm Ultra Plus® can be used to fill smile lines and augment lips.
For those in their 40s, damage caused by sun exposure become apparent. More aggressive skincare can help combat the visible signs of aging. A combination of topical solutions like tretinoin (Retin-A), AHAs, and BHAs, along with microdermabrasion brings the best results.
There are many procedures available to smooth and tighten skin. Photofacials, chemical peels, and topical treatments are effective in decreasing the signs of aging as well as minimizing pore size. Fillers like Radiesse®, Restylane®, Juvéderm® and Juvéderm Ultra Plus® can help restore volume in the mid-face and fill smile lines. For upper face and forehead lines, Botox® injections may be in order.
For those who choose the surgical route, face, brow, eye and neck lifts are very popular procedures.
By age fifty, regular skin examinations by a certified aesthetician or plastic surgeon are essential.
Maintaining natural moisture is more difficult. Peels and light therapy in combination with ultra-hydrating home care can help maintain the balance. Laser resurfacing combined with fillers to restore volume can provide an impressive rejuvenation.
In all likelihood, more extensive facial rejuvenation and resurfacing procedures will be necessary at this stage. Depending on your appearance goals, comprehensive surgery can reverse signs of aging in the face, brow, mid-face, and neck areas. A facelift or brow lift in conjunction with laser resurfacing can yield dramatic results. The payoff for more invasive surgery is a natural, more supple look that is virtually undetectable.
NOSE RESHAPING - Cosmetic Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is one of the five most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. The surgery is a longed-for cosmetic solution for those who are dissatisfied with the size and/or shape of their nose. Since the nose is one of the most prominent facial features, changing its shape and size can significantly improve the balance in the face, bring harmony to the features and overall, have a great impact on the patient's appearance and self-image.
Nose reshaping is an outpatient procedure that usually lasts about 2 to 3 hours. Rhinoplasty can be performed in either of two methods: open or closed. Open rhinoplasty requires an incision across the columella (lower part of the septum which divides the nostrils), which gives the surgeon direct access to the nasal tissue to be reshaped. With a closed rhinoplasty, all of the incisions are made within the nostrils. A” tip rhinoplasty” may help to correct droopiness at the tip of the nose into a more youthful “perky” position. Dr. Maggi, who specializes in rhinoplasty surgery, will decide the best treatment option for you based on your individual situation and your desired results.
Some patients know how they want their nose to look, but other rhinoplasty patients just know they don’t like their nose, and just want someone to help them. We understand this and will take the time to work with you to help you have a happy result.
We normally do not see much discomfort after a rhinoplasty and medication is prescribed. You can expect to have bruising and swelling as well as a stuffed feeling for the first few days. For the first week after your surgery you should sleep with your upper body elevated to help minimize swelling and bruising. It can also ward off postoperative bleeding. A nasal splint is worn for several days up to two weeks after surgery depending on whether a bone fracture was performed. Saline spray is recommended for your comfort for about two weeks. You may be asked to follow up in the office weekly if internal work was performed to clean the inside to ensure unobstructed breathing.
Common Questions about Rhinoplasty
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic or reconstructive surgery of the nose. It is also known as nose reshaping and often called a nose job. A rhinoplasty can correct many problems of the nose. For a more pleasing symmetrical look, the dorsal hump may be removed. The cartilages of the nose can also be trimmed to create a more refined or pleasing shape. A bulbous or droopy tip as well as a deviated septum may be addressed in the enhancement process. This procedure can refine the nose while bringing harmony and balance to the face.
How is the Rhinoplasty procedure performed?
A rhinoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. An incision is made either across the bottom of your nose between nostrils (open technique) or a closed technique in which the incision is made in the mucosal lining of your nostrils. After the procedure the patient is awakened and sent to recovery. After the patient is comfortable, they are released to go home. Someone must be with you to drive you home; you will not be able to drive yourself. Dr. Maggi follows up with all his rhinoplasty patients 24 hours after surgery.
What should I expect at my consultation?
At your consultation, you will meet with Dr. Maggi and specific goals will be identified and discussed. Discuss what you want out of your rhinoplasty surgery. Dr. Maggi will review your goals and explain what can be achieved realistically through the art of rhinoplasty. This procedure is a surgery of precision and is an art form in many ways. Modern rhinoplasty techniques allow Dr. Maggi to care for individual needs in each customized surgery.
When should I be able to see the results?
Right after surgery, your nose will look swollen and there may be some bruising at least for the first few days. Swelling, particularly at the nasal tip, may persist for several months, depending on the thickness of your skin. Our taping program is very helpful to minimize any swelling. In rare cases, swelling may not totally disappear for 1 to 2 years. Some degree of swelling is more apparent in the morning when you get up, subsiding as the day progresses.
Dr. Maggi regularly performs this surgery in his Austin surgery center and explains, “I tell all my rhinoplasty patients many times before the surgery that this particular procedure requires a lot of patience on the part of the patient. In my experience this is particularly evident in an open rhinoplasty. I feel that most of this is because rhinoplasty is a ‘surgery of millimeters,’ and many early concerns will change as the healing process takes place as the majority of the swelling of the various tissues (skin, cartilage, bone, etc.) subsides. I feel that having my patients ask me or my staff questions or voice any concerns, is a fundamental part of the healing/post-operative process, and I encourage it.”
Dr. Maggi explains that many of his patients come to his office seeking advice about revision surgery from a previously performed rhinoplasty elsewhere. It is best to get it right the first time but it is possible to correct mistakes. Selecting your surgeon carefully is paramount. He encourages patients to schedule a consultation to see photographs of his many satisfied rhinoplasty patients.
